For Illawarra hospitality and event management students, a recent visit to P&O Cruises’ Pacific Jewel provided a valuable opportunity to learn the finer arts of their specialty from the cruise line’s onboard experts.
Carnival Australia Corporate Executive Chef Uwe Stiefel and Manager – Entertainment David Druery last week gave Illawarra-based students from TAFE NSW an insight into what happens on a daily basis onboard Pacific Jewel.
Mr Stiefel said P&O Cruises regularly hosted hospitality students onboard its ships.
“Two or three times a year we are taking hospitality students from hotel schools in Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle (TAFE and HTN) for a tour on our ships” Mr Stiefel said.
“The visits give them an inside view of a different sector of the tourism and hospitality industry, as most of them would only have known a number of land-based career opportunities, such as hotels, resorts, restaurants, pubs and bars,” he said.
Teacher Georgina Davies said the students had a wonderful time and learnt a great deal.
“The knowledge shared was excellent and backed up so many of the components they learn in the classroom,” she said.
