SYDNEY-siders turned up en-masse to take place in the first ever slip and slide time trials on Dee Why Beach this month. Hosted by Carnival Cruise Lines, the event was designed to help Aussies prepare for “the real thing” when Carnival Spirit’s Green Thunder waterslide heads down under in October. During the 04 February event, Carnival’s world-record breaking 30-metre slip and slide was unfurled, allowing locals the chance to test their slide speed against the elite guys and girls from the Ocean Thunder surfboat series. Prizes up for grabs for the fastest slip and sliders included a spot on Spirit’s Sailaway Celebration cruise which was won by Toby Allnutt, one of the Ocean Thunder Young Guns from the Bulli surfboat team. For his efforts Toby and his family will get the chance to test out Spirit’s steepest and fastest waterslide at sea, Green Thunder. Toby is pictured below with Carnival Cruise Lines’ Marketing Manager, Tracy Bromfield.

LAST week, the Minister for Ports, Duncan Gay, welcomed what has been dubbed as “Sydney’s Super February” for cruising. Speaking with media outside Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT), Minister Gay said the 33 cruise vessels visiting Sydney Harbour this month represent the highest number of cruise ships ever to visit the city in a single month. “The NSW economy welcomes the contribution being made to this State’s economy by the cruise industry,” he said. “We welcome the thousands of cruise passengers who are this month experiencing the excitement of entering the world’s finest harbour,” he added. In terms of catering the growing demands on Sydney’s current cruise infrastructure, Minister Gay said that the NSW Government has committed $87 million to the cause, including 57m for the new White Bay passenger terminal, $25m set aside for improvements to the OPT and $5m for improvements to mooring facilities at the OPT to allow for berthing of larger ships. ONE very special lady has arrived at Sydney’s Garden Island this Valentine’s Day, QM2. Delighting cruisers on this day of love, QM2 even played host to a wedding proposal by sporting a large banner reading “Marry Me Jess” (she said yes!) .
Meanwhile, her visit will also see the historic return of Captain Matthew Flinders’ journal of his epic circumnavigation of Australia, to sea. Flinders, who gave Australia its name, was born in 1774, and is credited as being one of the most successful navigators and cartographers of his age. Together with Captain William Bligh, he circumnavigated Australia between 1801-03 on the HMS Investigator, making daily entries in his diary of his adventures and discoveries. More than 200 years later, the journal is part of a display of key items from the State Library of NSW’s priceless Flinders Collection, which are accompanying QM2 on her first voyage around the country. The historic QM2 Flinders display also features an original copy of Flinders’ map of Australia, first published in 1814.

CLASSIC International Cruises’ 580 guest cruise ship, Athena, returned to Sydney for the first time in seven years yesterday during its one off Round Trip voyage from Adelaide to Eden, Sydney and Melbourne. The popular ship is in the midst of its most successful season in Australia, with CIC mdfor Australia, Grant Hunter telling guests at a lunch held onboard yesterday that repeat cruise passengers were extremely high”. “Business is up 7% and repeat passengers are up 52% on long cruises and 30% on short cruises,” he said. Athena will spend 191 days in Australia this season a big jump from the 98 days she sailed in her first season in 2008, and according to Hunter, by the end of this year she will have carried a cumulative total of around 86,000 guests in the region since her debut season.Pictured above at yesterday’s lunch is: Nuraini Rifai and Suzanne Silva, Creative Cruising; Chrissy James, Dean Sinclair and Marita Lam, Cruise Co and Jan Harrington, FC Head Office.

ECRUISING.travel continues to add the ultimate in luxury to its tours, with its most recent charter of a jet for its African safari and ruise package. Although the third time that Brett Dudley’s agency has charted a jet, it was the first time that an Australian company has one business with Kenyan Airways and also the first time in four years that the airline has flown directly from Nairobi to Cape Town. Peter McKeon, country manager Australia for Kenyan Airways and Delta Air Lines, flew to Nairobi last week to give Dudley the keys to the new 737-800. Around 100 people joined the charter, enjoying an itinerary which included three nights in Dubai, one night in Nairobi, five nights in Kenya’s spectacular Masai Mara and three nights in Cape Town, prior to joining QM2 to cruise back to Australia. “The service and food on board were as good as any flight I’ve been on,” Dudley said. “Our clients totally enjoyed it, especially the fly-over of Mt Kilimanjaro – we were that close you could have touched it.” Pictured above (from left) is Captain George Mully, with Peter McKeon, country manager Australia for Kenyan Airways and Brett Dudley.

The Wheels for Hope charity provides disabled people with specially tailored vehicles so that they can be mobile, with Athena providing a free stage show and lunch for 42 corporate guests. The event raised $6000 through ticket sales and a silent auction - and now Athena is en route to South Australia here she will tomorrow commence her third season based in Adelaide for the next month. The 550-passenger ship will dock at the Outer Harbour cruise terminal around 7.30am to begin the longest ever season for SA’s growing cruise industry, and the biggest ever commitment to the local market by Classic International Cruises. This year’s SA season for Athena, supported by the South Australian Tourism Commission, will include three round trip voyages from Adelaide, including the first ever return voyage from Adelaide to Sydney. There’s also a round trip to Tasmania and back, along with a three night Australia Day cruise to Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln. SYDNEY-siders recently got an eyeful of the biggest vessel to visit Australia so far this summer, Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess. The whopping 116,000-tonne Diamond sailed into Circular Quay’s Overseas Passenger Terminal at a respectable 7am last Friday morning, at the end of a cruise from Asia. At 63 metres in height, Diamond was too tall to fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but she put on a good spectacle for onlookers, taking up the length of four 747 jumbo jets in one of the world’s most recognisable harbours. Meanwhile as the rest of Sydney gawked, lucky passengers boarded ready for their NZ Christmas cruise which departed the same day. For those who missed her this time, Diamond is scheduled to cruise between Australia and NZ until February, visiting Sydney three times.

SYDNEY based travel agency Temple Travel and Adelaide’s Phil Hoffmann Travel in Glenelg have been rewarded for their monumental marketing efforts, by being named the winners of P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises inaugural marketing competition. The competition, which was launched earlier in the year, invited agents to submit details of their most successful promotional campaigns for either P&O Cruises or Princess Cruises. Temple Travel’s campaign which integrated social media with flyers created using the MyCCS website won the P&O award, having introduced new cruises to the cruise line’s offerings and ultimately boosted sales. Meanwhile Phil Hoffman Travel in Glenelg was awarded the top spot by Princess Cruises for its efforts which included seminars, MyCCS flyers and eye-catching co-branded collateral. For their efforts each of the agencies will receive $5,000 to spend on marketing, as well as one-on-one consultancy sessions with marketing and advertising gurus, BMF and Amnesia. Speaking to agents at Carnival’s Partnership Summit onboard Dawn Princess this week, Jenny Lourey, senior vp of Carnival Australia, said that the efforts of all the agencies who entered the competition were very impressive and deserved congratulations. “The competition entries really demonstrated the hard work agencies put into promoting the Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises brands,” she said. THE sun was high, the sky a deep shade of summer blue and the wind perfect for sailing, as Captain Cook Cruises and its team of travel industry representatives boarded the yacht Star of Antlia for the 2011 Rotary Charity Regatta. This year’s Regatta saw 35 companies, including Captain Cook Cruises sponsor yachts to race around Sydney Harbour, with funds going towards the Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick to buy “essential equipment for the hospital’s new operating theatre”. For it’s generosity Captain Cook Cruises’ and its industry guests had the opportunity to race against yachting legends including Wild Oats X, Brindabella and Loki. In true Captain Cook Cruises style, onboard Star of Antlia the cruise line’s guests were treated to a selection of fine wines and beers whilst soaking in the sun, sea and stunning harbour views. Although the team came in close to last, it was noted that the yacht was selected for its luxurious and comfortable style, rather than its speed. The lucky group is pictured above (bottom row from left) Alex Raicebe, Captain Cook Cruises; Brooke Tolar, Captain Cook Cruises; Kate Bourne, Adventure World; Allen Brooker, Pan Pacific Travel; (top row from left) Christie-Lee Lachance, Specialist Holidays and Graham Boan, Travel Corporation.

The BBQ coincided with the launch of the cruise line’s Earlybird campaign, and was also an opportunity for agencies to raise money for charities in their local community. A GROUP of very lucky Australian travel agents had the opportunity to explore the wonders of the Mexican Riviera recently, onboard Carnival Splendor as part of a Travel the World, Carnival Cruise Lines and V Australia agent incentive. The pampering began for the group with a flight from Sydney to LA with V Australia, before they departed Long Beach onboard Carnival Splendor to spend two-days in the celebrity soaked Cabo San Lucas where they swam with dolphins. Other ports on the menu included the tropical Puerto Vallarta where agents enjoyed zip lining through the jungle. Onboard agents were spoilt for choice, with countless activities provided each day, fine dining and after dinner dancing. The agents also enjoyed watching the hairy chest competitions at the main pool, and learning to dance in the ‘Speculator, Spectacular’ theatre. L’Austral will undertake a northern Australian itinerary at the end of Mar, crossing from French Polynesia to call in Cairns, Cooktown, Townsville and Darwin before heading on to Bali and Singapore - and while here agents will have the opportunity for inspections. “This is the first step to greater awareness,” Mahouin said, with Ponant expanding capacity with a recently ordered third vessel which will be a sister ship to the 132-passenger L’Austral and Le Boreal.
