CARNIVAL Australia ceo Ann Sherry yesterday was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sydney’s Macquarie University, in recognition of her significant contribution to the government and corporate sectors. Sherry’s extensive career has included senior roles with Westpac Bank, as well as with the Office of the Status of Women within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. She’s headed up Carnival Australia since switching career course in July 2007. The citation for the honorary Doctor of Letters highlighted Sherry’s commitment to “making a difference to the lives of people in general and of women in particular”. Speaking at an official graduation ceremony, Sherry encouraged students to follow career directions about which they felt passionate, as well as taking well-considered risks. “For me, making the jump from government to the corporate sector was a risk. Making the jump from Westpac to the cruise industry was seen as a risk,” she said. “There can be a million reasons for not taking a chance and plenty of people to dissuade you from taking a leap of faith”. Ann Sherry is pictured above in her graduation robes with Macquarie University Chancellor Michael Egan.
Congratulations, Dr Sherry!

According to a Celebrity Cruises spokesperson, the cruise line has since received “glowing reports from agencies that were onboard, such as Travel the World, Travelscene and Just Cruises - all saying that design, décor and the food were fantastic”. FORMER Army Signal Corps sergeant Gregory Melikian treated guests onboard Star Princess to a special presentation about his experiences during WWII. As part of his service, in 1945 at 20 years of age, Melikian was tasked with sending the telegraph message from US General Dwight Eisenhower announcing the end of the war in Europe. The message was sent shortly after the surrender of German forces from the makeshift Allied headquarters located in a French schoolhouse. Melikian gave his presentation in the Star Princess’ Princess Theatre during a holiday he was taking onboard with a large group of family and friends. He was also invited to meet Captain Edward Perrin on the ship’s bridge (pictured above).

LAST Friday Carnival Australia staff were invited to “dress down to stress down” to raise funds for Lifeline, with ceo Ann Sherry cruising the office to select the most creative sleepwear outfits. Lifeline is a key charity supported by Carnival, which supports the crisis counselling service with donations of surplus items from ships when they go into dry dock. Sherry said that nearly $140,000 had been raised in this way to help fund Lifeline - and on the day colourful Lifeline slippers were also on sale at $25 a pair, with Carnival matching staff donations dollar for dollar. The company also donated $5 for each employee taking part in a series of workshops on meditation, yoga and laughter. “It was a fun day with a serious intent to support Lifeline’s community work in crisis counselling,” Sherry said. Pictured above are the winners heading off to bed: Rosalino Gonzales, Elise Wellfare, Nicole Huby, Antonia Papadopoulos and Rachel Kenrick with Ann Sherry.

A GROUP of very lucky West Australian travel agents were hosted onboard the stylish RV La Marguerite whilst enjoying the first-ever Travelmarvel-Malaysia Airlines famil of Vietnam and Cambodia. As part of the Mekong River cruise the agents enjoyed local fresh food, and made good use of the vessel’s sundeck bar, pool, lounge and restaurant. Highlights of the voyage included small group shore excursions to local markets and villages between Saigon and Siem Reap. Particularly “powerful experiences”, according to Kellee Gilmour, APT/Travelmarvel BDM in Perth who escorted the group, included visits to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, as well as a tour of the Genocide Museum and Killing Fields in Phnom Penh. The group pictured in front of Marguerite includes (from left): Monika O’Reilly, Travelmarvel; Lily Gerarchi, Best Cruises; Justin La Grange, Malaysia Airlines; Michelle Jenyns, Escape Travel Joondalup; Debbie Morris, Escape Travel Whitfords; Kelly Spinks, Jetset Albany; Kellee Gilmour; Olga Shrewsbury, Jetset Joondalup; and Sunita Ahuja, RAC Cannington.

RECENTLY Royal Caribbean hosted its first group of Australian agents onboard Voyager of the Seas, for a four night Asian cruise. Departing Singapore on 29 May, the agents enjoyed port calls in Malaysia and Thailand, and had the chance to experience Royal Caribbean’s DreamWorks Experience at sea ahead of Voyager’s arrival in Australia in Nov this year. Highlights of the voyage included the flash DreamWorks parade, meals at the specialty dining restaurant Portofino and shore excursions at Port Kelang and Phuket. According to an informer at Royal Caribbean, one Aussie agent, who shall remain nameless, also enjoyed the entertainment at the Schooner Bar so much so that after it finished they returned to the bar, switched the microphone back on and put on their own little show, the only shame being that there was no one left in the bar to enjoy the songs. Pictured left onboard Voyager with none other than Puss in Boots, is Peter McCormack, national sales manager at Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Australia, who accompanied the group.

THREE Carnival Australia team members took a trip back in time, swapping big ships for tall ships and sailing with the crew of the replica HM Bark Endeavour on the final leg of her 13-month circumnavigation of Australia. The lucky group, Carnival Australia Port Operations manager Brad Coyne (pictured left climbing the rigging), yield analyst Russ Granger and cruise consultant Sunshine Sonnenfeld, stepped onto the decks of history for an epic six day adventure on the high seas, sailing from Eden to Sydney after winning the chance to do so in a company ballot. The sailing opportunity was provided to Carnival as part of the company’s sponsorship of the circumnavigation. “Just like Cook’s crew, we slept in hammocks, handled the rigging and set and furled the ship’s 17 sails,” said Sonnenfeld, “It was truly a once in a lifetime experience,” she added.

UNIWORLD Boutique River Cruises this week held a launch for its 2013 Preview Brochure which will see it become the only major river cruise line to offer an itinerary in Italy (CW 08 Mar) with a River Countess voyage on the Po River and the Venice Lagoon. GM John Molinaro (pictured right) highlighted a range of additions to the 2013 program, including the debut of Queen Isabel on the Douro River in Spain and Portugal, as well as the addition of the River Orchid which will cruise the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia alongside the River Saigon. The expansion brings the total number of Uniworld cruises to 31, and with the launch of the preview brochure, the operator is offering 2012 pricing for 2013 departures when booked before 30 Jun. Also new is an 11 day Christmas/New Year cruise on the waterways of Germany, Austria and Hungary, as well as the 8-day Highlights of Eastern Europe which takes in Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Vukovar and Belgrade. Australia is the second biggest source market for Uniworld after North America, and Molinaro said the ongoing development of the product meant that the cruise line is constantly looking for new opportunities. “Australians are looking for new places and new rivers,” he told Cruise Weekly, but Uniworld is also continuing to offer popular itineraries including the Imperial Waterways of Russia and the eight day Enchanting Danube from Budapest to Passau priced from $2,695pp. The full 2013 brochure will be released in Jul - more info www.uniworldcruises.com.au.

AN exclusive group of cruise aficionados gathered over the weekend to enjoy the elegant christening of the newest jewel in MSC Cruises’ fleet, MSC Divina. Presided over by Divina’s Godmother, none other than screen legend Sophia Loren, the high-profile event was themed Med with Passion, to reflect the vessel’s “embodiment of Mediterranean style” and included a gala dinner and entertainment. “Every detail of the onboard experience and the christening itself were carefully considered to reflect the colours, the perfumes, the history and the culture of the [Mediterranean] area,” a statement from MSC said. The exclusive event took place in Marseille, and was opened with a breathtaking aerobatic and jet plane show performed by the Captains Aerobatic Display Team and the Breitling Jet Team respectively. Other highlights of the ceremony included a performance by acclaimed Italian singer, pianist and composer Paolo Conte. EIGHTEEN excited Australian travel agents descended onto Egypt to partake in a spectacular 14-day Scenic Tours famil. Once in the ancient land of the pharaohs, the Aussies cruised the serene waters of Lake Nasser in Upper Egypt from Abu Simbel to Aswan, onboard the MV African Dreams. On land the group were spoilt at the Kempinski Resort at Soma Bay on the Red Sea coast of Egypt, and enjoyed a charter flight to Abu Simble to visit the temple almost entirely on their own. The group were also surprised by the team at Scenic with a special balloon ride at Luxor. According to Scenic, the agents’ response to the overall Egyptian experience was ‘extremely positive’, with most saying they were “blown away” by the “hospitality shown throughout”. Members of the privileged group are pictured above (from left) on the luxury Nile River Cruise ship, Sun Ray as they prepare for the Galabeya Party onboard: Hayley Lyson, HWT, Scone, NSW; Bridget Le Maitre, HWT, Leopold, VIC; Teisha Woolnough, Scenic Tours, NSW; Kimberley Hall, HWT, Belconnen, ACT; Karen Spencer, Go Tours Travel Eleebana, NSW; Saffron Russell, Travelworld, Alice Springs; Kelli Williamson, HWT, Mount Hutton, NSW; and Christine Gunning, Capital Travel Manuka, ACT.

THE students of Australia’s first cruise qualification, Diploma Tourism (Cruise Operations) have thanked industry partners including Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Oceania and APT River Cruising for passing on their product knowledge. The course, which launched this year, is currently nearing the end of its first semester, and consists of tourism, hospitality and events content, plus a dedicated day per week of cruise contextualisation. Later this month the class (pictured below) is heading off on their first experience of cruising onboard Pacific Pearl, whilst later in the year they will also have the opportunity to complete a first aid, fire safety and basic sea survival course. “The course has been developed after recognising a demand for individuals who want to take advantage of the massive growth and opportunities in cruising,” said lecturer and ex- Princess Cruises hotel officer Jonathan Sharp.
