MSC Cruises has lit up Hamburg’s Elbe River in its christening event for MSC Grandiosa, shortly before announcing it would be the first global cruise line with carbon neutral marine operations.
All carbon dioxide emissions from MSC’s fleet will be offset from 01 Jan, with the announcement coming as part of a broader vision to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, in tandem with continued investments in advanced environmental technology allowing for zero-emissions ship operations.
The declaration came on the occasion of the cruise line’s largest-ever christening event, with Grandiosa (pictured) set to visit eight countries and 11 ports across 127 days, engaging with over 14,000 travel agents.
With special guests including European celebrities Annemarie & Wayne Carpendale, Michelle Hunziker, Emma Lanford, Mousse T and Jochen Schropp, godmother Sophie Loren named her 15th MSC Cruises ship, with Grandiosa “the most environmentally friendly” flagship the line has built.
Grandiosa will now embark on a tour to Southampton, Lisbon, Portugal, Barcelona, Spain, Marseille and Genoa before commencing seven-night cruises on 23 Nov.
The line also revealed details of its 2022 world cruise last week, which will pay visit to 43 ports.
